Dog chews and biscuits

Save money by making healthy, delicious dogs chews and biscuits

The following recipe guidelines will get you started in making your own chews and biscuits.  You will have to experiment with how long to cook potatoes in the microwave and also with the different types of ingredients your dogs enjoy in the biscuits.  But here are a few pointers to get started.

Each pet is unique, and each pet has their own likes and dislikes and foods they can tolerate.  My dogs tolerate these natural treats well, but yours may not.  As with trying anything new with your pets, give them a small sample first to see if their system can tolerate it and so they can get used to it.

Sweet Potato Dog Chews

Wash 4 evenly sized sweet potatoes and place in microwave for about 10 minutes.  After 10 minutes, check doneness by pressing on potato - slightly soft is what you are looking for, not well done.  Just soft enough to be able to cut through it and so they are not raw.

Next, slice sweet potatoes into 1/4" slices lengthwise and place on food dehydrator rack.

Dehydrate on vegetable setting for approximately 8 hours.  When done they should be firm, yet still pliable.

Let cool, then store in refrigerator in plastic storage bag or container.

Before storing, make sure you let your doggies sample them! :-)

Potato Dog Chews

Prepare the same way as the sweet potato chews.  Microwave until slightly soft and not raw.  You may want to sprinkle lightly with salt and perhaps garlic powder to give potatoes a bit of flavor.

Homemade dog biscuits

These are approximate measurements and ideas of ingredients to make your own homemade dog biscuits your dogs will enjoy!

2 c. whole wheat flour
1 c. white flour
2 c. oatmeal - uncooked
1 c. corn meal
1 c. dried milk
3/4 c. vegetable oil
4 eggs
2 c. water (more may need to be added to make cookie dough type consistency)
Small amount of salt, sugar, bullion powder added to taste for flavoring

Mix all ingredients until thick cookie dough consistency.

Drop in heaping tablespoonfuls, then flatten, on greased cookie sheet.

Bake in 350 degree oven for approximately 40 minutes.  Let cool, then store in refrigerator.
